In October of 2004 the railroad that ran from Country Club Road through downtown Bloomington to Adams Street was removed ending 151 years of service to the City of Bloomington and Indiana University. Over the past 151 years this railroad transported thousands of students and citizens.  It transported every conceivable commodity from building materials, dry goods, food, clothing, coal for heating, rolls of newspaper and limestone for buildings across the nation such as the Empire State building in New York City.  The Monon Railroad Employees did their job well and helped make City of Bloomington and Monroe County what it is today.  We need to always rembember them with a permanent monument to the employees of the MONON.
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA
One Monon Railroad fan said "This picture is sad, it looks like soldiers passing in review on their way out of town."  Nothing is protecting the crossings in Bloomington for the first time since 1853.   All of the crossing signals removed were purchased by Monon Railroad fans.  All are on private property now in Bloomington, Ellettsville, Spencer, Bedford, Greenwood, Hope, Terre Haute, Worthington, Martinsville, Rockville and Solesberry, IN. Two were taken out of state by Monon fans, one to Colorado and one to North Carolina.
